Get to know the magic of Scilla (RC) and the Costa Viola by booking a boat excursion with us! How many treasures does the sea hide? How was fishing once upon a time? What legends shroud this stretch of coastline? Our sea tour along the Costa Viola begins with these questions.
For the summer of 2023 we offer 3 different experiences:
Excursion to the waters of Scilla
Having cast off the moorings, we set off from the Port of Scilla, beginning with the story of the feluccas that still fish for swordfish in the waters of the Costa Viola. We skirt the Scoglio di Ulisse, the Castello Ruffo di Scilla, the neighbourhood “sutta u chianu” (a Scillian dialectical word meaning “underground neighbourhood”), which, observed from the sea, takes the form of a nativity scene, with its houses overlooking the sea.
We continue along Marina Grande (Scilla’s main beach), the Costone Tre Croci (Three Crosses cliff), which has collapsed in the 1908 earthquake and razed Reggio Calabria and Messina to the ground, and the surrounding villages. Arriving at Capo Pacì we admire the little villas, built on the rock overlooking the waters of the Strait of Messina, exactly opposite Torre Faro (a hamlet of the municipality of Messina). We turn back to go towards Chianalea, a fishermen’s district, often called ‘the little Venice of the South’. We skirt the village passing by the houses bathed by the sea, and continue on to the olive grove beach and after a few minutes’ boat ride we arrive at the beach at Favazzina (a hamlet of the municipality of Scilla), where we stop for about 30 minutes for a swim in the crystal-clear waters.
After this stop, we return to the small port of Scilla.
Duration: approx. 2 hours
Price: adults, 28€ per person; children: free up to 8 years / 15€ up to 12 years
Departure times: 10:00h – 14:00h – 16:00h
Excursion to the waters between Scilla and Bagnara
All aboard, we head off from the port of Scilla, skirting the ancient Borgo di Chianalea, a fishing quarter also known as the Little Venice of the South. There you can admire the houses and restaurants built up with pile dwellings by the sea.
We continue navigating towards the Bagnara Calabra coastline, telling ancient stories and traditions of Calabria. In that stretch of water, with the swordfish-hunting feluccas, we sometimes manage to take wonderful photos while the fish is spotted and caught and, if we are lucky, nature might let us see dolphins and some manta rays.
This tour offers a wonderful landscape, full of small caves and hidden coves with enchanting seabeds. We arrive at the Bagnara Calabra coastline after around 40 minutes sailing. There, the ledges and indentations of the mountains come together, blending up with the sea. We will find wonderful natural caves, the most famous of which are the ‘Grotta delle Rondini’ and the
“Grotta del Monaco”. We will also visit Cala Leone and the beach of Cala Janculla, where the boat makes a stop. After the break, we return to the Scylla marina.
Duration: approx. 3 hours
Prices: adults, 35€ per person; children: free up to 8 years, 20€ up to 12 years
Departure times: 10:00h – 15:00h
Excursion to the waters between Scilla and Cariddi
Casting off from our moorings, we set off from the Port of Scilla, heading down to the coast towards Chianalea, a fishing district often called the little Venice of the South, admiring the houses and restaurants built up with pile dwellings by the sea. As we approach the Strait of Messina, we will skirt the Scoglio di Ulisse, Scilla’s Ruffo Castle, the underground district, Scilla’s main beach, Costone Tre Croci, Capo Paci, and the small villas that overlook the sea. We continue our navigation towards Torre Faro where, crossing the waters of the Strait of Messina, the sea current forms whirlpools at moon points; this is where the story between Scilla and Cariddi was born. After around 20 minutes we arrive at Torre Faro, a hamlet of Messina, located at the north-eastern tip of Sicily. After admiring its beautiful beach, we proceed for a swimming stop. After this last break, we return to the small port of Scilla.
