Aeolie Island- Vulcano Lipari Sciara by day

The Aeolian Islands, of volcanic origin, are considered among the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean. Thanks to their history and incredible natural beauty, they represent a magical place that is absolutely a must-see…

The first stop is at Vulcano (approx. 10:15h – 12:45h) legendary home of the Wind God Aeolus. The southernmost island of the ‘archipelago is separated from neighboring Lipari by a channel about 1.6 km wide and is formed by 4 volcanoes among which one is still active.

A two-minute walk leads to Levante Bay, which is affected by fumarolic manifestations where the underwater thermal springs (hot water) and natural mud (sulfurous) possess exceptional therapeutic qualities effective for rheumatism, arthropathy and circulatory affections (currently not accessible for bathing). Possibility of swimming in the warm/thermal waters. Five minutes away from Porto di Levante, however, are the Black Beaches where you can take advantage of a swim or simply walk barefoot on the shoreline. The main street is full of souvenir stores, bars, clothing and costume jewelry stores.

It is also possible to hike to the Great Crater; the path to the summit is located about a 5 min walk from Levante Landing, the island’s main port. The hike is not strenuous, does not require any special equipment or preparation, and is suitable for anyone. The duration is about 2 hours.

The path to the summit is a pleasant walk of about 45 minutes, nestled among gorse, volcanic rocks and dark, sandy soil consisting mainly of volcanic dust.

One of the main reasons why it is worth climbing up to the Grand Crater is undoubtedly the views. As you gain altitude, you can catch a glimpse of Alicudi, Filicudi and Salina, but it is only once you reach the top that you fully perceive the magic of this archipelago. From here, in fact, it is possible to see all seven islands together, as well as the Vulcanello Peninsula. The Great Crater of Vulcano is the only place from which the entire archipelago can be contemplated in a single glance. Looking south, however, opens up views of the northern coast of Sicily and Mount Etna, offering some of the most striking views of the archipelago. 

The next stop is Lipari (stop about 13:00h – 15:00h), the largest island of the Aeolian archipelago; it has an area of 37.6 sq. km. Its coasts are generally high and rocky with stacks and caves. It is possible to visit the small town with its thousands of narrow streets and a large historic center dominated by the Castle located on a promontory. Stupendous is the panorama offered to visitors. The Museo Archeologico Eoliano, on the acropolis in Via del Castello, is one of the most interesting of all; you can visit it. Here you will also have the opportunity to shop and taste typical Sicilian cuisine in its typical small restaurants (optional). Bathing on the beach is not recommended, as you would have to rent a cab to get to the nearest beaches and your time would be too short.

The last stop will be a circumnavigation of Stromboli, the only volcano in Europe and one of the few in the world in permanent eruptive activity. It emerges from the sea with two peaks with a height of 920 mt. The crater zone consists of 3 active cones, whose volcanic activity is predominantly explosive in character, throwing lapilli and magma fragments. The lava flows channel into a wide, steep basin toward the sea, called Sciara di Fuoco. During navigation, there will be a beautiful view of Panarea with its many rocks before arriving there.
